Blossom End Rot on Tomatoes: It's Water, Not Calcium

The sunken brown-to-black patch on the bottom of your tomatoes is blossom end rot, and almost every time it comes down to uneven watering, not a calcium shortage in your soil. Fix the water and the next round of fruit comes in clean. Adding eggshells, Tums, Epsom salts, or a foliar calcium spray will not turn it around — most garden soils already have plenty of calcium, and the plant can’t move sprayed-on calcium into the fruit anyway. Keep soil moisture steady, and if you’ve never had your soil tested, do that before you buy anything.

What’s actually happening

Blossom end rot is a physiological disorder, not a disease — nothing infected the plant. It’s a localized calcium shortage in the fruit itself, which can happen even when there’s ample calcium in the soil and in the rest of the plant. Calcium travels up the plant dissolved in water through the xylem, so the fruit only gets its supply when water is moving steadily. Let the soil swing from soaked to bone-dry and back, and that pipeline stutters; the fast-growing blossom end of the fruit is first to come up short, and its cell walls collapse into the leathery sunken spot you’re seeing — which can spread to cover a third to half the fruit’s surface.

This is why the calcium remedies fail. Clemson’s horticulture center is blunt about it: calcium already in the leaves can’t travel through the phloem into the fruit, and the fruit’s skin can’t absorb a foliar spray, so calcium sprays don’t work. Epsom salts are worse than useless here — the magnesium competes with calcium for uptake and can make the problem deeper. The one real lever is water.

A few things make a plant more prone. Paste and plum types and other large, elongated varieties have a higher calcium demand and rot more readily. Heavy nitrogen, especially the ammonium form, pushes fast vegetative growth that outruns the fruit’s calcium supply. And a heat snap that suddenly speeds growth will tip a plant that was coping into a flush of rot. Peppers and eggplant get the same disorder from the same water-driven cause, and Utah State groups all three crops together — the steady-moisture fix and the same weekly watering target apply to them just as they do to tomatoes.

What to do

Steady the water first, because that’s the actual fix. Aim for even soil moisture rather than a flood-then-forget cycle: most tomatoes want about 1 to 2 inches of water a week (UConn), applied deeply enough that the soil never dries out completely between waterings. Oregon State frames it by depth instead: soak the root zone to about 2 feet every 7 to 10 days. Purdue’s rule of thumb of roughly 1 inch of water per week lands in the same place. A layer of mulch holds that moisture even and buffers the swings that trigger the rot in the first place.

If it keeps recurring, get a soil test through your local Cooperative Extension office before adding anything. A test tells you whether calcium or pH is genuinely off — Oregon State’s guidance is to correct either only when a test confirms it, not on spec. Spending the season chasing a calcium deficiency you don’t have is the most common way gardeners stay stuck on this.

Pick off the affected fruit. It won’t reverse, and removing it lets the plant put its energy into the next set, which comes in clean once watering is consistent. Go easy on high-nitrogen fertilizer too, since pushing growth works against you.

Blossom end rot on the first few tomatoes of the year is common and usually self-correcting once the plant settles and your watering steadies — it’s not a sign the plant is failing. It also isn’t contagious; one rotting fruit won’t spread it to the others. Where to actually pay attention is a pattern that keeps going past the early fruit and across most of the plant, which points to a watering routine that still isn’t consistent, or genuinely off soil that a test will confirm.
