How to Transplant Seedlings

Transplant cool-season seedlings 2–6 weeks before your last spring frost. Warm-season crops — tomatoes, peppers, eggplant — go out only once nighttime temperatures reliably stay above 60°F. Both groups should have completed 7–14 days of hardening off before you plant.

How it works

Transplant shock happens because the root ball of a young seedling is far smaller than the soil volume around it, which means it dries out faster than you’d expect. The surrounding bed might feel moist while the root mass itself is critically dry — the plant wilts even though you watered an hour ago. That dynamic is what most transplanting advice is designed to manage.

Not every crop transplants well. Penn State Extension is clear: root vegetables — carrots, beets, parsnips, radishes, rutabagas, turnips — should never be transplanted. Disturbing the taproot produces misshapen or forked roots, and even careful handling doesn’t prevent it. Direct seeding is the only reliable method for those crops. Peas have a similar preference; they germinate in soil above 40°F (optimal range 55–65°F) and should go in as direct sowings 50–70 days before summer heat arrives. Crops that handle transplanting well include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and head lettuce. Cucumbers, melons, and squash fall in the middle — transplants started 3–4 weeks early can meaningfully extend harvest in short-season climates, so the choice depends on where you garden.

Container size matters for recovery speed. Cornell CALS notes that a pepper in a 3-inch pot bounces back faster than one in a small cell pack, simply because it has a larger root mass going in. If you’re buying transplants, plant them within a day or two of purchase — the longer they sit outside in a small container, the harder establishment becomes.

What to do

A well-watered root ball makes contact with surrounding soil more easily and begins drawing moisture immediately rather than sitting in a moisture deficit, so soak it thoroughly before planting.

Dig the hole roughly twice as wide as the root ball and only as deep as the root mass. Plant at the same depth the seedling grew in its container. The one exception is tomatoes: bury them deeper, removing the lower leaves first. Stems buried underground form adventitious roots, producing a stronger plant. For seedlings in peat pots, the entire pot must sit below the soil surface — any rim left exposed acts as a wick that pulls moisture away from the root zone and can kill an otherwise healthy plant.

If the roots have formed a tight circular mat at the bottom of the container, make a few shallow vertical cuts in the root ball before planting. This disrupts the circling pattern and encourages roots to grow outward into the bed. Handle seedlings by their leaves rather than their stems; stem cell damage is harder for a young plant to recover from than a lost leaf.

Cut roots callus over given a day or two, which reduces the disturbance on planting day. So when transplanting from flat trays, cut the soil into blocks around each seedling one or two days before moving day.

Apply a starter fertilizer solution immediately after setting the transplant in the hole: West Virginia University Extension recommends 1–2 tablespoons of an all-purpose fertilizer such as 20-20-20 per gallon of water, applied at 1–2 cups per transplant. Cornell notes that a phosphorus-rich nutrient solution supports root establishment specifically. Then water again to settle soil around the root ball, closing any air pockets.

New transplants need daily irrigation until established, because the root ball dries out faster than the surrounding soil and can’t yet draw from a wider area. The signs that establishment is underway are new leaf growth and a plant that no longer wilts between waterings, both of which mean roots have started reaching into the bed; until then, keep watering daily. Choose a cloudy day, early morning, or evening for transplanting. Heat and direct sun during the hours right after planting add stress on top of root disturbance. Protect plants from strong winds as well, since even a steady breeze increases transpiration before roots can replace lost moisture. A temporary row cover or a piece of cardboard set on the windward side for the first few days is enough. If temperatures spike above 90°F in the days after transplanting, expect some visible damage, but Michigan State University Extension notes that plants typically recover within about one week once conditions moderate.

Zone and season notes

In cool zones (5–6), the 60°F nighttime threshold for warm-season crops often isn’t reliable until late May or early June. Transplanting tomatoes or peppers two weeks earlier than that — even if the days feel warm — regularly produces stunted plants that stall until temperatures catch up. The date on the calendar matters less than the thermometer reading at midnight.

Fall planting of cool-season crops uses a different calculation. West Virginia University Extension provides the formula: add days-to-harvest plus the harvest period plus 14 days (a fall adjustment factor) plus any frost-sensitivity buffer, then count backward from your first expected fall frost. A crop that takes 60 days to harvest, with a two-week harvest window and moderate frost sensitivity, needs to be transplanted roughly 90 days before first frost to reach maturity before hard freezes arrive.

In warm-winter zones (9–11), the fall cool-season window is the primary growing season. Warm-season transplants can go out earlier in spring than in northern gardens, but the fall timing question — when does it get cool enough for broccoli and cabbage — matters more. Use soil cooling and nighttime temperatures rather than calendar dates, since cool-season growing conditions arrive on their own schedule depending on the year.
